Synopsis - Hope Springs Eternal
The Penguin calls the meeting of the super-villains to order, stating their tactics against the heroes in the past have failed and suggests picking someone other than their usual enemies as their target. He passes them his hat to randomly pick their targets and they agree.
Many years ago, Wonder Woman caught some criminals disguised as the Boston Police with her friend Anna, a superhero known as the Socialite. While having tea with her, Anna states that she’ll like to visit Paradise Island and leave Wallace behind. Confused, Diana asks what happened to her boyfriend Gustav and learns he didn’t like her being a superhero. She met her waiter Wallace a month ago and was attracted to him and he makes her laugh. Diana states that she’ll like to have what she does and Anna responds she is always busy saving the world.
As they are talking, the restaurant’s staff requests a photo of the two together and Diana agrees as long as she gets a duplicate of it. Back in modern time, Diana realizes she is late for visiting Anna at the hospital while looking at the photo and being lost in her thoughts. Anna is dying from cancer which Diana learnt from her daughter. The two reminisce about their time together and Diana eventually apologizes for talking so much. But she tells her not to, stating she shouldn’t apologize for who she is.
Diana promises to visit when she can, but Anna tells her to bid her final goodbye. Anna later attends her funeral and hears sirens blaring when everyone has left, seeing nuclear bombs falling out of the sky. She is unable to stop them and while resenting it, sees Anna and the other undead come out of the ground. As they grab, her mother arrives and tells her that they must end mankind for harming the planet. Diana while flying out into space upon a pegasi, finds that the entire Earth has been devastated due to the nuclear war.
As the Amazons slaughter humans, she tells Hippolyta it is wrong as they can’t kill everyone for what a few people did. She however realizes none of it is true and contrary to reality, demanding whoever is making her hallucinate reveal themselves. Scarecrow is surprised to find that his fear toxin has waned instead of making her go insane. She then tears off his mask in revenge for attacking her after she buried Anna, which leaves him hallucinating about monsters.
After she drops him off at the Arkham Asylum, Scarecrow is restrained for his own good and Diana is told that it’s unknown when he will recover. Diana states that she can find out why he attacked her in the way he did when she buried her friend. While leaving, she hopes she can make the world a better place just like Anna.
Synopsis - Gundra the Great
Wonder Woman arrives in Doroslavia after learning about reports about aggressive behavior initiated by Volksland’s soldiers to stoke a war. She finds the scene littered with destroyed military equipment and learns that the Valkyrie Gundra was behind it and attacked after hearing the cries of a woman being threatened by Volkslandic soldiers.
Diana tells her to restrain herself as the two nations are involved in a border dispute and attacking the soldiers could set off a war. Gundra responds by punching her through a wall. Diana however saves herself from her sword’s attack with her bracelets and throws the Valkyrie away. The Volkslandic soldiers arrive at the scene and their commanders orders them to fire at her, mistaking her for the one who attacked them earlier.
After Diana deflects their bullets back at their feet, the soldiers run away but she gets grabbed by Gundra. Using her lasso, she learns that the Valkyrie fell to Earth when a portal opened up during the battle she and her sisters fought to safeguard Asgard from an invasion and she has finally found a place where she can bring justice. She however fears returning and dreads that they might have died.
Diana reassures that she will help her and Gundra gladly accepts her as a sister. The Volkslandic soldiers however return, citing Diana’s intrusion as a casus beli for conquering Doroslavia. They however are easily subdued by the two women and their commander promises they won’t invade before returning.
Synopsis - Year One - Part Four
This story is reprinted from Wonder Woman (Volume 5) #10
Steve and Etta want to bring Diana out of jail, to let her see the world and to get her accustomed to the American culture. They obtain a six hour leave, and they bring her to the mall, together with Barbara Minerva as she is the only one able to communicate with her. Diana thinks the mall is wonderful: the loudness, the air, the people. But she is also disturbed a little by images of half-naked women in a bikini and girls going around in high heels, as she clearly does not understand why proud women should dress like that. After making friends with a pair of children, she has dinner with her friends and discovers that thanks to the Lasso of Truth, she can learn English. Also, when the four of them take hold of the Lasso, they start telling their sincere opinion on one another.
Then, a shooting starts: five men with automatic rifles. Diana automatically jumps to the rescue and defeats them all, saving a family. Impressed by her, the media tries to overwhelm her, but Steve and Barbara protect her. Then, watching one of the terrorist, they see a tattoo on their chest: a symbol of a dying tree. Both Diana and Barbara comment they saw that symbol themselves, and Steve informs there it’s the sign of the SEAR Group.
