With the first official issue 1 of Rebirth underway we get a typical Rucka “slow burn” story, light on action, as Diana continues her quest to find Themyscira. Etta and Steve are reintroduced as supporting characters although Etta is now black.
As the title would alternate between story arcs every fortnight, the artists would too. For “The Lies” it would be Liam Sharp taking up drawing duties while on “Year One”, it would be fan favourite and self proclaimed Wonder Woman super-fan Nicola Scott.
Alternate covers were initially provided by Frank Cho but this would be short lived however.
Synopsis
Diana arrives at Bwunda, searching the rain forest for her friend Barbara Minerva. Meanwhile in a secret compound in Virginia, USA, commander Etta Candy arrives to get a situation report from Steve Trevor and his team who are also in Bwunda tracking down a warlord named Cadulo. He reports that they are encountering resistance from Cadulo’s men so it appears he has been tipped off about their mission to stop him. Etta notifies Steve that satellite imagery had picked up Wonder Woman entering Bwunda air space and asks if she is after the same thing. Steve does not know but the thought of Diana being so close stirs up memories for him.
Steve and his men arrives at a village and find many wounded. He asks if that had been the handy work of Cadulo’s men is told that they had come into the village and taken everyone’s daughters.
As Diana enters deeper into the rain forest calling out that she comes in peace she finds herself under attack by Cheetah. But she does not resist and when pinned on the floor by her nemesis, tells Barbara that she needs the archaeologist’s help to find her Themyscira – because she can no longer find her way home.
