This issue is the first post Crisis appearance of both Steve Trevor and Etta Candy. In the modern DC Universe, Steve Trevor is no longer Wonder Woman's primary love interest, instead getting involved with Etta. This story also introduces Wonder Woman's golden lasso to post Crisis continuity, as well as the children of Ares, who apparently replace the Duke of Deception, Lord Conquest, and the Earl of Greed as the post Crisis Ares' new henchmen.
Lieutenant Candy drives Colonel Stephen Trevor to a US air force base at midnight. There he is assigned to fly a mission by General Kohler, who turned out to be working for Ares.
Cut to Diana in full battle armor waiting pensively in front of the statue of Artemis on Paradise Island. She is waiting for her mission to be revealed. Watching her are Hippolyta, Philippus and Menalippe.
Cut from the statue of
Artemis to the real goddess in Olympus. She and her fellow
goddesses are impatiently waiting as Hephaestus who is beating
one of the two girdles of Gaea into a lasso of truth. This is
transported by Artemis down to Diana. Hermes follows it down
and takes Diana's hand. They both vanish in a flash of light,
leaving a worried Hippolyta.
Cut to Steve Trevor's plane, flying lost through a thunder storm. The navigation goes and the plane hits turbulence. It drops into a spin, which Steve manages to pull the plane out of.
Cut back to Diana and Hermes who are flying above Areopagus - the home of Ares. It has been decimated by his presence, however Hermes tells Diana that he's not home; he's hiding in Man's World. Diana enters alone and meets a bandaged woman in rags. This woman turns out to be Harmonia, daughter of Ares and Aphrodite. She presents Diana with a amulet which is only visible from one side. Hermes calls to Diana, telling her that her home is in danger.
Cut to Paradise Island where we see the amazons being called to arms. Over head we see a jet flying out of a thunderstorm. Steve's co-pilot, Captain Slade, starts to strangle him. It becomes apparent that Slade is possessed, although it is unclear who is behind it. The demon explains that Slade's skill was needed to pilot the plane through Athena's clouds, but now that they are there, it will seem as though Trevor will be responsible for the death of all the amazons. While fighting, "Slade" sees Diana flying towards the plane and drops the bomb that they are carrying! Diana catches the bomb with her lasso and then throws it back at the plane which explodes and drops into the sea. Diana follows the plane down into the water. There she is guided by Themis away from Slade who has dissolved due to the spirit of Ares possessing him, and towards Steve Trevor.
Cut back to the US air force base. Lieutenant Candy has informed General Hillary of what transpired during the night. They go to seek an explanation for the midnight mission. Only to find that like Slade, the spirit of Ares has consumed General Kohler...
Cut back to Paradise Island where against Philippus' objections Steve is being cared for. Athena appears and tells Diana that to defeat Ares she must find the other half of the amulet. Diana says farewell to her sisters and is transported by Hermes to Man's World.
>Cut to the air force base where Steve's closest friend Colonel Michaelis is being questioned about Steve's meeting with Kohler.
Finally we cut back to the nether regions where Phobos and Deimos are watching these events unfold.
